The German RoboCupJunior Championship has been held annually since 2001 and consists of a two-stage competition. First, student teams must qualify in regional qualifying tournaments to participate in the German RoboCupJunior finals. Currently, there are eight locations where tournaments are held in February or March of each year.
Since 2001, the RoboCupJunior Finals have always been held as part of the RoboCup German Open. Only in 2006 and 2016, when the RoboCup World Championship was brought to Germany, the finals became an independent event.
In the years 2020 to 2023, the RoboCup German Open in its form as a central German RoboCup event with international Major and German Junior teams had to be cancelled due to the pandemic. The replacement in 2022 and 2023 are the staging of the RoboCupJunior Finals as an independent event at Messe Kassel.
